I’ve known Robert for 20 years. His portfolio of commercial work demonstrates his photographer’s craft, breadth of experience, and versatility. It spans broadly to illustrate his ability to capture the nuance of a story, not just a scene; his wonderful sense of humor is often captured in his composition and framing and the wide range of these skills captured my imagination and ‘spoke’ to the our creative teams over many projects.
But Robert is more than what you see in a beautiful portfolio. He is also a great listener; always catching the detail between the lines of a notion. Like magic he can distil that detail back so succinctly. I trust his depth of understanding will bring an extra layer to the work. I imagine he’ll win over others to his work with perception and craft as well.
Over the years, I’ve come to know his skill is deep, his passion is endless and the caliber of his imagery remains of a constantly high standard. His personal work is soulful and intriguing and his commercial work is succinct while wonderfully capturing humanity.
All great stuff. But I suspect his best feature is his easy, winning disposition and no holds barred approach to problem solving. If nine tenths of great work is having a healthy share of positive attitude, he has that angle well and truly covered.
I’d work with him again in a heartbeat.

I met Robert Earnest when I went looking for the best photographer on the west coast. I was new in Canada, but my job was made simpler by the fact that the best photographer in the east suggested him. It was a big campaign for BMO then Canada’s second largest bank, and I needed someone with an incredible gift – a precise, demanding craftsman combined with elephant-sized chutzpah. Robert possessed both qualities in spades. He was unendingly inventive, constantly opportunistic and he took big chances to produce that rare thing – an editorial style, photojournalistic series of images that captured incredibly real moments, but worked perfectly in the ads I had designed. The images and the ads went on to win awards. One image in particular, Airshow, has often been held up by many creative directors as an example of the finest advertising photograph of its kind. Our paths have crossed many times since, and Robert has continued to delight my eye with images of extraordinary beauty and authenticity. Robert is a master of light and composition but his art appears to be entirely without artifice. It doesn’t hurt that he is a funny, kind man and crazy fun to work with.
